2000's Dungeons & Dragons film flopped so spectacularly that it took Hollywood almost an entire quarter-century to work up the courage to try again, but finally, the beloved RPG franchise is back on the big screen in glossy blockbuster form.
While Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves has a steep hill to climb in order to recoup its hefty $150 million budget - especially with so much big-budget competition right now - solid reviews and positive word-of-mouth from audiences could help it become a breakout hit. As ever, time will tell.
Though the new D&D movie has its fair share of faults, and can't help but feel slave to the current four-quadrant blockbuster formula to an extent, it nevertheless adapts the franchise to the screen in a fun and accessible way while still managing to respect the source material.
For anyone craving a frothy, straight-forward, and visually inventive adventure film, Honour Among Thieves does just enough to satisfy. And in the event that it does well enough for Paramount to greenlight a sequel, it's easy to believe that the next movie will build on this relatively modest foundation.
